Artemether and Lumefantrine is a combination medication used primarily to treat acute uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, including cases resistant to chloroquine. Artemether works rapidly by inhibiting nucleic acid and protein synthesis in the parasite, providing quick symptomatic relief. Lumefantrine has a longer half-life and helps clear residual parasites in the blood, ensuring effective parasite elimination. This combination is effective against erythrocytic stages of the malaria parasite. Common side effects include headache, loss of appetite, dizziness, muscle and joint pain, fever, and vomiting, with some serious risks like prolonged QT interval in the heart. It is typically used in adults and children weighing at least 5 kg. The medication is administered orally and is included on the World Health Organization’s List of Essential Medicines. A special formulation for infants and young children was approved recently, designed to dissolve easily and be more palatable.
